    Description

RAY JOHNSON 1983 marking pen ink on paper. original artwork. This work by Ray Johnson is a "please send to" example of his Correspondence Mail Art project. It measures 3.50 x 2.75 inches.Red marking pen "bunny head" and blue clickable pen instructions.
Johnson was a pioneer in Mail Art. He created the NEW YORK CORRESPONDENCE SCHOOL.
This piece demonstrates Johnson's carefree approach to art and how he often communicated his method of building an idea through this simple ritual of physical activity. In this instance, Johnson forwarded this message indirectly to me by sending instead to the then-Director of the Discovery Gallery in Glen Cove, NY (in the period of 1982-through the 90's). The objective being that we pass around conceptual art using the Postal System. Much could be said discussing the difference, if any between actual passing of messages vs. a Virtual one. Johnson always loaded his works with all sort of iconic references to other ideas/works as well playing with words as he frequently had done. A delightful work, it was always a pleasure receiving a snail mail message, a telephone call, or a "bump into" at a show opening,
    or a Ray Johnson performance!
